Regulation
Action regulation
involves the adjustment of the internal components between the key and the hammer (the action). Proper adjustment of
key dip, hammer travel, and other parts results in the piano responding precisely to the expressive input of the pianist.
Voicing
Voicing is the manipulation of the
piano's tone to suit the desire of the pianist. It involves altering the hammers to produce a tone which is brighter
or softer, crisper or mellower, or something in between. As a piano ages its hammers can become compacted by repeatedly
hitting the strings, resulting in a brighter, harsher, and sometimes unpleasant sound. Voicing can restore a piano to
its original tone or change it completely if you wish.
Rebuilding
When a piano becomes quite worn,
it may no longer sound or play properly and may no longer hold a tune. Rebuilding involves the complete disassembly
of the piano including the strings and the plate and replacing major components to restore the piano to a 'like new' condition.
While this does involve considerable expense, it can have dramatic results, especially on high quality vintage pianos.
